Computers are in many cases, the most technologically advanced piece of equipment in homes and offices. They also the quickest to become obsolete - thrown out to make way for the latest and greatest. If one of the many components making up a modern computer should break, often the whole computer is discarded, regardless of the fact that the vast majority of the components are still perfectly functional.
In addition to perfectly useful, functional hi-tech computer equipment being regularly wasted, there is the environmental issue. Tonnes of plastic and metal waste are being generated when these computers are thrown out.
When computers are regarded as obsolete, they are still able to perform the exact jobs they could when purchased new. It is just the software has got more complex, and people’s expectations have increased, wanting the computer to do more than it can achieve. However, these computers are still perfectly capable of their original job - surfing the internet, running office applications, acting as a home server or media box and even playing older games.
When a computer breaks it is usually just one or two components of the many that make a computer, that are defective. By replacing these components - maybe a graphics card, or a new hard drive - the computer is functional again. Alternatively the working components can be removed and used to repair other computers, making useful, in many cases powerful machines. Modern PC’s use a modular system for assembly making these repairs and component retrieval relatively simple.
It is for these reasons that as a spare time project, I recycle computer components where I can. Whether these have been gained from friends and relatives from old unwanted computers, or purchased as job-lot components, I check that they are working where possible and recycle them on this site. In many cases, people do not need to go and buy an expensive new PC if all they need is an internet machine, or even a basic gaming computer.
